Biutiful

Uxbal, single father of two children, finds his life in chaos as he is forced to deal with his life in order to escape the heat of crime in underground Barcelona, to break with the love for the divorced, manic depressive, abusive mother of his children and to regain spiritual insight in his life as he is diagnosed with terminal cancer.

  2. Mixed feelings on this one. Acting was great, but other than that I didn't really care for it. The glass door reflection scene really kind of bothered me too, I hate when the viewer can spot an obvious scene not flowing moment.

The depressing plot didn't bother me at all, I just never really cared about any of the characters, other than his kids/Lili. Every character was exploiting someone else (which I get is part of his world) but it just seemed to be "how can we top that last bit of bad criminal activity with worse criminal activity" and his actions to try and be the good guy in each event. Nevermind that he was a key player in creating all these horrible events. By making his character a good dad and giving him a terminal illness, it felt as though we were supposed to feel sorry for him. I only felt bad for his kids, knowing they'd be without a father who obviously loved them and stuck with that woman who was in no condition to be a mother. Not my favorite film, but I can definitely see why he was up for an Oscar.
