The IFCS inaugural movie extravaganza will be Feb 19th 2010, 8:30 p.m.
We will be viewing: Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
British writer Guy Ritchie made his feature directorial debut with this crime-caper comedy-drama set in London's East End and heavy on the Cockney dialogue. A get rich scheme goes awry: Cardsharp Eddy (Nick Moran) and pals Bacon (Jason Statham), Tom (Jason Flemyng), and Soap (Dexter Fletcher) scuffle to pile up enough money to put Eddy at the card table opposite gangland lord Hatchet Harry (P.H. Moriarty). Unfortunately, the whole plan backfires, leaving Eddy owing Harry a huge sum, payable within the week. To raise the cash, Eddy sets out a caper, to blag a business run by Winston (Steven Mackintosh), but the inevitable gunplay doesn't make for an easy heist.
Cheer's mate, chip chip cheerio and piss off ya wanka
I had never seen this, but knew what to expect from having seen "Snatch" Tried watching it without subtitles, but after 5 min, knew I'd have to watch again to understand it. I'm so glad I did! For me, actually understanding what they were they saying really helped get the humor! There were some scenes that without the subtitles, I would have been lost and not laughing like I was.
ReplyDeleteI loved how it all tied together...not wanting to give anything away for those who haven't seen it yet, but I found all the ambushes funny because of the various results...how people were trying to steal from each other only to have that person (they were stealing from) be the one they were stealing FOR in the first place...how the one they were trying to sell stolen goods to was the one they actually stole them FROM...funny, to me.
I found some of the "moral" storylines funny, considering what kind of work these folks were in...Big Chris being upset with Dog because he had been rude to him and his son...Dog being kind of fatherish to his group of idiots...the guys standing by Eddy's scheme, because they're friends...Big Chris giving the guys info about the value of their "kept" goods (even tough he kept the contents of the bag)...Gloria being patient about the situation and knowing when to lend a hand...Big Chris' love for his son (what about the wife, he was wearing a band afterall)...I could go on
Overall, I thought it was a good fun movie, which I may have not thought had I not used subtitles. I liked the ending, left you wondering if he answered the phone...
"A minute ago this was the safest job in the world. Now it's turning into a bad day in Bosnia.”
ReplyDeleteI liked how Guy Ritchie let you know in the title sequence that that the action was going to go round and round, if you pay attention to the title every "O" is raised above the rest of the text and stands out.
I hadn't watched it in quite awhile and I had forgotten how funny it was, nothing like hearing people cuss with a British accent, just sounds classy! I liked the sense of loyalty the characters displayed, even when it wasn't in their best interest.
I agree with Sunflower Runner, I liked how the ending left you wondering whether Tom answered the phone in time. Part of me hopes he did because you can’t help but like the guys, but then part of me thinks it would serve them right to lose the guns, they had no business trying to take on Hatchet Harry in the first place! And what can I say about Big Chris? He obviously believed in “take your kids to work” day!
And I forgot how good the soundtrack was! For me the standouts tracks were "I wanna be your dog" by The Stooges, "Why did you do it" by Stretch, and "The payback" by James Brown.
"It's been emotional."
alrighty then... lets see... what can I possibly say about this movie? only that it was hard for me to get into and understand. but do have to admit it was not that bad. will I watch it again? yeah probably not. do I recomend it? Only if you like Guy Richie.
ReplyDeletealright then biotches.. I'm out!
Ok, first of all I am going to have to apologize for my in and out attendance to the movie due to last minute family priorities. This also played into my lame abilities to seriously critic the movie..,even though this is the second time that I have attempted to watch it.
ReplyDeleteAll that being said... I HAD A VERY DIFFICULT TIME UNDERSTANDING THE LANGUAGE! It was hard for me to follow (part due to being in and out of the room) but also because I couldn't follow what they were saying so it was hard for me to understand the humor.
Not sure that I would attempt the movie for a third time. Just not quite my style of movie...
What can I say, I like the movie. After knowing who Guy Ritchie is now, I can totally see that this is one of his movies. The quick, thickly accented dialogue is (at some times) hard to catch up with, but if you can get into that zone, there is a lot of funny stuff going on.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was also interesting to see Jason Statham (Bacon) in a movie he wasnt the primary star, or even the toughest guy, in. Big Chris out-manned him big time...there were a couple spots I found really funny, because how his character was cowering... must've just been me.
I liked how all events of one group impacted another group, a bunch of one or two-degrees of separation - that made it all the more funny.
I also agree with Affie in that the soundtrack is great - some seriously good music, and the use of the different styles at different points in the film gave an even greater impact.
All in all - a good film if you can handle the accented dialogue.
This movie is brilliant, this is Guy Ritchie's directorial debut, Guy displays his own style of comedic genius as he takes you on a trip through the backstreets of London’s high stakes gambling circle. It is worth mentioning that Lock Stock has one of the most “Wicked” soundtracks of all time, particularly the tracks “18 with a Bullet” and “Police and Thieves” by Junior Murvin take you back to the days of old school rare soul. The soundtrack takes a major role during the action sequences and frankly for that matter even through the dialogue which is hilarious, who would have ever thought British gangsters were so polite and proper! By far the best performance of the night was by Vinnie Jones, Jones portrayal of the imposing, ruthless enforcer “Big Chris” is second to none. Jones demonstrated the ability to play the bad guy, that you love to hate, but just can’t bring yourself to hate. One minute he is teaching his boy about the business and correcting him for using fowl language, the next minute he is bashing some poor saps head in with a car door. If you loved Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Tarantio’s other linage, this movie should be right up your alley. As a side note Ritchie’s follow up films Snatch and RockandRolla equally produce laughs and action, Ritchie is quickly making his mark on the ganster film genre. Dark, Gritty, Outrageously Hilarious definitely worth a go!
